Andreea Braescu: The magic of nature

Andreea Braescu creates illuminated dreams of leaves from delicate porcelain

Delicate clouds of white leaves float through the room, filling it with their warm light. Like fairy wings, they exude a graceful lightness and joie de vivre that you can otherwise experience only in nature. Deliberately applied gilding underlines the cheerful radiance with romantic echoes. The Romanian light installation artist Andreea Braescu’s room-filling sculptures evoke feelings of harmony and freedom in nature. The lavish abundance of delicate chandeliers – generously arranged, bright and exquisite – evoke an enchanting elegance of playful moods with all shades of light.

Andreea Braescu carefully handcrafts her elegant chandeliers in white porcelain. In her Bucharest studio she casts the individual elements and combines them with filigree metal to create exceptionally impressive seas of flower petals and foliage. Her works of art are an expression of her joie de vivre and inspiring one-off pieces that she makes only to order. Step by step, she creates compositions whose symbolism stands for serenity and calm, filling interiors with the breath of life. When the viewer is immersed in a singular world, Andreea Braescu has accomplished what she set out to do. She masterfully combines emotions and functionality. Her installations turn out to be chandeliers only at second glance – but they are so much more than simple sources of light. The material she uses is the finest bone china porcelain, translucent and phosphatic: a ceramic of the highest quality, delicate yet highly durable. Created in meticulous detail, with an eye for every last detail, the up to one thousand individual parts of a single chandelier are first cast. Hardened, the leaves are then shaped, finely worked and polished, glazed, and fired at 1,260 °C. Once the organic shapes of the metal frames have been designed and made of the highest quality stainless steel, the leaves – now partially gilded – are attached and joined to form an enchanting ensemble. Although the entire process can take up to three months, it is definitely worth waiting for. All lighting installations are custom-tailored to suit the room in which they will later be hung. They should harmonise with their surroundings and create a natural symbiosis between space and the rhythm of light, shadow and emotion. Their expressiveness is focused, exuding individuality. They breathe life into every room – and delight the occupants.
