When Czech tech entrepreneur and self-made billionaire Jiri Smejc was unable to find a destination that could fully fulfil his high expectations, even after countless trips to the Maldives, a lifelong dream took shape: what if he could realise his vision of the perfect island resort himself? He found what he was looking for in Noonu Atoll, around 190 kilometres from the capital Malé. Velaa Private Island was opened in 2014 thanks to a 50-year contract with the Maldivian government and a large financial commitment.
